Though a relatively new idea, backpacking in India has taken off well with newer and niche hostels coming up to cater to huge inflow of tourists.
Here is a list of upcoming and emerging hostels in South India.
1. Vedanta Wake Up!
Vedanta Wake Up! opened its doors to tourists and visitors in 2011.
It brands itself as a chain of luxury backpacking hostels. Each property offers dorm accommodation and residents also have an access to wireless internet, computers, TVs, DVD players, books, guitars, board games, and maps.
Activities are organized to keep the travelers occupied and it is an attempt to make them interact and meet each other. Currently, Vedanta Wake Up! has locations in four places in Kerala — Fort Kochi, Alleppey, Kovalam, and Varkala.

2. Red Door Hostel
Red Door Hostel opened in early 2014 and is located minutes away from Anjuna beach in north Goa. It has been built in the traditional Goan style and fitted with private rooms that have all the basic amenities.
With its fun and friendly environment, visitors can hope to have a great experience here.

3. Jungle Hostel, Goa
Jungle Hostel in Goa, is situated in a restored Portuguese style house amidst a lush jungle. It is on the road to Vagator beach. With its communal and chilled out vibe, this is a beautiful Goan backpacking hostel.
There are dorm rooms and air-conditioned private rooms to choose from.

4. Prison Hostel, Goa
A unique and niche hostel, the Prison Hostel captures fun mug shots of its guests, inmate style.
This hostel is extremely laid back and relaxed. It is perfect for party people and is located 10 minutes from Anjuna beach.

5. Wanderers Hostel, Goa
Wanders Hostel in north Goa is a new hostel built in a revamped Goan bungalow. Along with dorm rooms, the hostel offers fabulous private tents with attached bathrooms with a view of the beautiful gardens.
