Amritsar is one of the most beautiful city in the state of Punjab. This place was founded by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das in 1574. During that period it was known as the “Guru Ki Nagri”. Later, it came to be known as Ramdaspur.
Main Tourist Attractions in Amritsar
One of the most attractive and religious place to the Sikhs, it is a very beautiful ‘Gurudwara’ and many people from all over the India come here. People are excited to be at a place which they see on t.V. It is a very respectful place. People must remain aware and respectful of the Sikh religion. In Golden Temple, it is compulsory to cover the head before entering, for both men and women. Smoking and alcohol are banned in the temple as it is a religious place. Photography is not allowed in the temple but tourists can click pictures outside the ring of lakes.
2. Jallianwala Bagh-
Another tourist attraction, it is 5 minutes walk away from the Golden Temple. People who are interested in knowing about the history must come and visit this place. The place has many secrets and tragedies attached to it. Inside the Jallianwala Bagh, one monument was built by Rajendra Prasad. On the walls of the monument, the bullet holes can be seen clearly.
What To Buy
Tourists must shop here for things that denote Sikh symbols like- khandas, swords, karas (Sikh religious bangles), daggers, etc from the shops. Shops will be available near the Golden Temple. Tourists who are interested in religious songs must buy CDs of temple recording, punjabi music and chants. Punjabi juttis (shoes) are available near Hall Bazaar flyover. Punjabi salwar-kurti and shawls are famous in Amritsar. It is a tradition of Punjabis. You can also buy hand embroidered dresses, ready made dresses, etc from there.
Famous Food Outlets
Tourist are very fond of tasting different kinds of food. You can try Amritsar’s special food here. There are many restaurants and hotels available, where you can have different variety of food. Like- Golden Temple (it has a dinning hall serving free basic meals to all). ‘Guru-ka-langar’ (free food) is very famous there. In Langar, people are served free meals daily. Food is available for around 10,000 to 20,000 people. Other restaurants like New Punjabi Rasoi, Bubby Dhaba, Pizza Hut, etc are also available.

Famous drink of Amritsar is “Lassi”. Its a made out of yoghurt(curd).
