If you are a travel freak and have been on the move for a while, you would have realized that the journey is more fulfilling than reaching the destination. And as far as journeys go, what better place to travel to than India, with its myriad culture and landscapes? Keeping this spirit in mind, here are 5 of the best road journeys through India.
Shillong – Cherrapunji
A lesser known but breathtaking road trip in India is from Shillong to Cherrapunji. There is no drive in India which has greener hill sides. As one moves through rolling hills and deep gorges, quaint villagers grin and wave at the cars passing by. One may stop at the few dhabas to savour smoked meat and ‘jadoh’ – the local pullow. And if you are lucky, you may meet an amiable villager with a bow and quiver of arrows. For a small sum of money, he may agree to sell them as relics.
Bombay – Goa
A spectacular road trip in India is on the National Highway 17, winding through majestic ghats and pretty coastal villages. The wide roads are great to drive on, but one must be careful at the steep turns. Shaded by coconut palms, there are many stop- overs for coffee and sandwiches. Goa is one of the best places to visit via road.
Manali – Leh
Undoubtedly the most thrilling road trip in India, the roads pass through rocky mountains and the famous Rohtang Pass. The road is open from June to September and is inaccessible during other times. The view is breathtaking and worth the tiring drive. Leh is one of the most unforgettable places to visit via road.
Rishikesh – Managaon
Start as early as six in the morning for this long drive through Garhwal mountains. The view changes from untidy villages beside a polluted river to the orange country of Chamoli to snow capped Himalayan peaks with the sparkling Ganga flowing through it. One can stop for the night at Joshimath, which is crowded with hotels and dhabas. Start off in the morning for Badrinath and the last Indian village of Managaon on the India-China border.
Guwahati – Kaziranga
Though a little offbeat, Kaziranga is certainly one of the best places to visit via road. The drive takes you through lonely tea gardens of Assam, lush tropical forests to the rhino country. Carry some bananas for elephants that may cross your path and give them a little treat. Enjoy a simple lunch of rice and fish curry at the neat dhabas that line up along the road.
